Social Security payments are sent out every month to about 70 million Americans. This includes money for retirees, people with disabilities, and survivors of deceased workers.
Here’s when you can expect to receive payments in May 2025:
Social Security Payment Schedule for May 2025:
- Thursday, May 1: Payments for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which helps people with little income and resources who are disabled, blind, or over the age of 65.
- Friday, May 2: Payments for people who started receiving retirement benefits before May 1997, and those who get both retirement benefits and SSI.
- Wednesday, May 14: Payments for people whose birthdays fall between the 1st and 10th of any month.
- Wednesday, May 21: Payments for those born between the 11th and 20th.
- Wednesday, May 28: Payments for those with birthdays from the 21st to the end of the month.
- Friday, May 30: SSI payments meant for June are paid early.
For SSI recipients, there's usually just one payment at the start of the month. However, if the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment might come a bit earlier. This means in some cases, you might get two payments in May.
If your payment doesn't arrive on time, wait three working days before contacting the Social Security Administration. Remember, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays aren't considered working days.
How Much Can You Receive?
- Retirement Benefits: If you start taking benefits at the Full Retirement Age (currently 67 years old), the maximum monthly amount is $4,018. If you retire early at 62, the highest you can get is $2,831. Waiting till you're 70 to retire could increase your monthly benefit up to $5,108.
- SSI: The highest monthly amount in 2025 is $967 for an individual and $1,450 for a couple. Your payment might be less depending on your income and living situation.
The amounts vary based on your earnings history and how long you've paid into the system. As of January 2025, the average monthly retirement benefit was $1,976.
